Although it wasn’t easy for some, 6th grade students took part in their first all-school dance today. To be sure, the vast majority, awed by the size of the crowd and the volume of the music, as well as the organization spearheaded by 6th grade administrator Mrs. Jeannette Jones, had a terrific time. Some did get overwhelmed, however, and retreated to the hall. They might choose the movie or quiet room options next time. It is difficult to convey to parents just how important these social events are to their children. It’s amazing that most of the students are able to concentrate in the week ahead of the dance enough to do their school work. Many min-drams take place in a short time. It’s all a part of the transition from kids to youth that is one of the primary developmental tasks of the middle school years.

The 6th Grade held a “Get Acquainted” dance today in the lunch room 6th period. To get in, each student had to have already filled out a form with 5 other students’ names and answers to fun personal questions. The catch was that those students could not have attended the questioner’s elementary school.
Once at the dance, and realizing that all they had to do was have fun, the students behaved as you might expect. It was safe and enjoyable. There was line dancing, solos, trains, even a few flips. PE teacher Anna Rabel supplied the music.
All in all, a great time and good preparation for next Friday’s Halloween dance together with the 7th and 8th graders in the gym. Stay tuned!
